What are the causes of Sciatica pain?
Sciatica pain or lumbar Radiculopathy is a symptom that is caused by the irritation or compression of one of the five spinal nerve roots of the sciatic nerve. This symptom can lead to another problem or disorder if it is not treated. In this article, we give you information related to the cause of sciatica pain.
Symptoms that cause the Sciatica pain
These set of symptoms can give rise to Sciatica pain or lumbar radiculopathy.
Causes of Sciatica pain     Â
In at least 90% of the cases, spinal disc herniation that is pressing on any of the lumbar or Sciatica nerve is the cause of the Sciatica pain. In this case, herniated disc and the swelling of the surrounding tissue causes pressure on the nerve causing the pain. The only Sciatica treatment for this is to ensure that the tear in the herniated disk is healed, and the swelling is subsided.
In this cause, the spinal canal begins to swell and the nerves in this spinal cord begin to narrow and compress the sciatic nerve roots causing the pain. The cause of compression of this spinal cord is caused by bone spurs, spondylolisthesis, herniated disc or inflammation. The Sciatica treatment for this cause is to reduce the pressure of the compression through light exercise or medication
This cause is exceptional in at least 8% of the cases where the individual is suffering from pain in the lower back or buttocks. In such cases, the sciatic nerve, which is runs through or is placed above the Piriformis muscle rather than underneath it. When this muscle undergoes spasms, it causes the sciatic nerve to be compressed and successively causing the pain.
In this cause, the position of the fetus can result in the compression of the sciatic nerve, when the mother is sitting or has a leg spasm. In such a case, the common symptom is numbness rather than any form of Sciatica pain. Normally there is no sciatica treatment for such a cause, as the symptoms normally disappear after the birth of the baby.
Sciatica pain or lumbar radiculopathy can be caused by a tumor growth on the spinal cord, or even on the sciatica nerve root. In such a case, the pain will extend from the hips to the feet and may also include bladder or bowel loss. The only Sciatica treatment for this cause is the safe and complete removal of the tumor.
Symptoms that cause the Sciatica pain
These set of symptoms can give rise to Sciatica pain or lumbar radiculopathy.
- Lower back pain
- Pain in the buttocks
- Numbness in the lower part of the body
- Pain or weakness in the various parts of the leg or foot.

- Herniation of the spinal disc
In at least 90% of the cases, spinal disc herniation that is pressing on any of the lumbar or Sciatica nerve is the cause of the Sciatica pain. In this case, herniated disc and the swelling of the surrounding tissue causes pressure on the nerve causing the pain. The only Sciatica treatment for this is to ensure that the tear in the herniated disk is healed, and the swelling is subsided.
- Spinal stenosis
In this cause, the spinal canal begins to swell and the nerves in this spinal cord begin to narrow and compress the sciatic nerve roots causing the pain. The cause of compression of this spinal cord is caused by bone spurs, spondylolisthesis, herniated disc or inflammation. The Sciatica treatment for this cause is to reduce the pressure of the compression through light exercise or medication
- Piriformis syndrome
This cause is exceptional in at least 8% of the cases where the individual is suffering from pain in the lower back or buttocks. In such cases, the sciatic nerve, which is runs through or is placed above the Piriformis muscle rather than underneath it. When this muscle undergoes spasms, it causes the sciatic nerve to be compressed and successively causing the pain.

Normally there is no sciatica treatment for such a cause, as the symptoms normally disappear after the birth of the baby.
- Tumors
Sciatica pain or lumbar radiculopathy can be caused by a tumor growth on the spinal cord, or even on the sciatica nerve root. In such a case, the pain will extend from the hips to the feet and may also include bladder or bowel loss. The only Sciatica treatment for this cause is the safe and complete removal of the tumor.
