How to Install a Toilet Stool
- 1). Use your putty knife to scrape any remaining wax off of the flange. Your flange is the ring attached to your floor and drainpipe that holds your new toilet's wax ring and bolts to the floor. Old wax can cause your new wax ring to seal improperly.
- 2). Place your wax ring in the center of the flange with the rounded wax side facing up. Wax rings are flat on one side and rounded on the other. You must make sure that the flat side of the wax ring is facing down.
- 3). Insert the closet bolts into the slots on each side of the flange and slide them forward until they stop. The threads on the closet bolts must be facing up. Place a plastic washer on each closet bolt. The plastic washers will have an X cut in the center of them. This is to help keep the closet bolts from moving while you set your toilet bowl.
- 4). Lift your toilet bowl and set it straight down over the closet bolts. There is a hole on each side of your bowl for the closet bolts to slide through. Press down on the bowl; do not rock or tilt it in any way, and do not lift your bowl up again. When you press down on the bowl it will compress the wax ring, creating a seal between the bowl and the flange.
- 5). Place a plastic bolt cover washer, a metal washer and a nut on each bolt and tighten with the appropriate size wrench. Use your hacksaw to cut off the excess length on the bolts. You only need approximately 1/8 inch of bolt exposed beyond the nut. Put the bolt covers over the bolts and snap into place.
- 6). Put the large rubber washer on the threaded ring on the underneath side of your tank. The tapered end of the washer will be facing out. The widest end faces the underneath side of the tank.
- 7). Set the tank on your toilet bowl. The washer on the tank sits in the hole on the back edge of the toilet bowl. Place a rubber washer on the two tank bolts and slide the bolts into the holes in the bottom of the tank and through the holes on the toilet bowl. Place a metal washer and nut on each bolt from the underneath side of the bowl. Tighten each nut with a wrench.
- 8). Open the hinge caps on the back of the toilet seat and set the seat onto the bowl. Insert the two plastic bolts through the hinges and into the holes. Place a nut on each bolt and tighten the bolts with a flat tip screwdriver.
- 9). Connect your water line to your shutoff valve and the inlet valve on the underneath side of the tank. Tighten both ends of the water line with the appropriate size wrench. Turn on your shutoff valve and allow your toilet to fill. Flush your toilet when it has finished filling to check for any leaks in the water line, the tank's bolts and around the base of your toilet.

Insert your tube of caulking into your caulking gun and caulk around the base of your toilet and the floor. Leave at least a 2-inch space at the back of the bowl not caulked. Wipe the excess caulking off with a damp rag.
