It seems like every new pet owner is asking, "how long does it take to potty train a puppy?".
The answer is simple...
as long as it takes for you to be consistent with your new puppy.
Not the answer you were looking for? Okay, let me explain.
The act of training a puppy to urinate outside is the simple part, it's the consistency that is typically the problem.
Many new dog owners lack the patience to train their dog, especially when things aren't going smoothly.
To be consistent you need to:
  • Walk the same route every day with your puppy
  • Use the same command words to tell your puppy it is time to start going potty
  • Give your puppy lots of love and praise when they actually go outside
The last one is usually the easiest! But, how do you know WHEN to take your puppy outside? This seems to be the question that perplexes every new puppy owner.
Just how long can my new puppy hold his or her bladder? This can be solved by using a simple formula created by dog experts: How To Determine How Many Hours Your Pup Can Hold Their Bladder The Puppy's Age (in months) + 1 This means that an 8 week old puppy should be able to hold their bladder at least 3 hours without an accident.
That is good news for those of us who can not spend every moment at home with our new dogs.
Now, the word you need to focus on is "should".
Your puppy is going to have accidents until they get the hang of it - after all they are still babies.
