Training Horses - What 3 Things Will Make Your Horse Disrespect You?

103 144
A disrespectful horse is a dangerous horse.
You must never allow your horse to disrespect you because when you're in the saddle it becomes dangerous to you as a rider.
One of the first things you never let your horse do is let him get in your bubble.
What this means is that your horse never gets in your space.
You can get in his if you want but he is NEVER allowed in yours.
What does this do for him respecting you? It teaches him that he cannot crowd you.
It teaches him to be aware of where you are.
It teaches him to keep safe distance from you at all times.
Since he learns these things, he learns to respect them and therefore to respect you.
The second thing you must not do is feed your horse from your hand.
Never, ever feed your horse from your hand.
If you want to give him a treat, that's fine.
Simply put it in a bucket or on top of the hay you're about to feed him and let him have it there.
There's a very in-depth reason for not feeding a horse from your hand but I assure you that it causes your horse to care more about himself than you.
And when you're out riding on the trail, you don't want him thinking more about you than himself.
Lastly, never let your horse do what he wants.
If you want to turn left and you ask him to turn left but he resists and goes right, then you make him go left no matter what.
Never, ever let your horse govern what he's going to do.
If he makes the decision, you will always be in danger of getting hurt.
