South Dakota students seeking higher education have a variety of options beyond federal government grants and loans. Grants allow a student to avoid incurring large amounts of student loan throughout the course of their education. South Dakota grants exist for students from Native American reservations, students interested in civics and academically outstanding students. - The Richard Hagen-Minerva Harvey Memorial Scholarship provides up to $6,000 over the course of four years for students attending college in South Dakota. Only members of South Dakota Native American tribes whose reservation is in South Dakota are eligible. Students receive $1,000 for the first two years, $1,500 for the third year and $2,500 for the fourth year of their college education. Students must also graduate from a South Dakota high school and apply to college either within five years of graduation or one year after military discharge. Applicants should submit two letters of recommendation, an essay regarding their desire to attend college and a list of extracurricular activities.
