How to Make Graduation Sashes
- 1). Measure yourself for the sash. Use measuring tape to measure from the nape of your neck around and down to the top of your hip. Double this number; write it down and keep it handy.
- 2). Lay your piece of fabric out on a flat surface. Place the cloth measuring tape at the edge of the fabric. Measure down to the number you wrote down when you measured yourself.
- 3). Draw a light colored line across the fabric where you measured down to. This creates a line to follow when you cut across the fabric using scissors. Cut along this line.
- 4). Fold the piece of fabric in half longways. Iron the folded piece of fabric. This will create a seam along the middle of the fabric so you know where to cut and it removes any wrinkles that have formed.
- 5). Cut along the seam created from the iron. Go along all the edges of the piece of fabric, folding about 1/4 inch down. Be sure to turn it back so that when you wear the sash, the hem will be hidden. This will prevent the fabric from fraying. Hold the fabric in place with sewing pins.
- 6). Sew your hem closed with a sewing machine. Go along the outside edges of your sash creating a simple stitch. Remove the pins when you have finished sewing along all edges.
- 7). Take your sash to an embroiderer and have the graduate's name and date of commencement embroidered on. Choose a school color for your embroidery thread.
