How to Warm a Carboy
- 1). Sit the carboy in the center of the selected storage tub.
- 2). Fill the tub with water. The closer the water is to 65 degrees F when added to the tub, the faster the aquarium heater can heat it to the proper temperature. The carboy need not be more than a half to two-thirds submerged to regulate the contents.
- 3). Peel the back off the temperature strip and adhere to the side of the carboy, above the water line. Whether you want to place the strip vertically or horizontally depends on the brand of temperature strip. Place it where you can see it, halfway between the top of the jug contents and the waterline.
- 4). Hang the aquarium heater to one side of the tub with the heating element fully submerged. The heater may hang from a hook on the side of the tub or by the use of suction cups to the side of the tub. The heater cannot be in contact with the carboy, otherwise uneven heating will occur. Plug in the heater.
- 5). Check the carboy temperature until you have optimized the temperature. Use the temperature strip attached to the carboy--not the aquarium heater--to ensure the contents are at the proper temperature. This is important because the fermentation process also generates heat.
