As the burden of disease in infants under 6 months of age is not well defined, this age group has been excluded from previous clinical trials and national treatment guidelines on uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria. Thus, oral anti-malarials recommended as first- and second-line therapies are frequently used off-label, based on the recommended mg/kg dosing schedule for older children.
