It"s All the Little Things When You Open a Dollar Store
After all, it took hours and hours of your time, but you found the perfect location and now you are ready to open a dollar store.
Well, even though finding the perfect location is critical to your business success, now isn't the time to sit back and relax.
There is much work to be done.
With a signed lease in-hand, it is now time to start planning the preparation of your store for opening.
It is time to start planning and preparing for your dollar store grand opening event.
And of course you have been anxiously awaiting the opportunity to start ordering the dollar store merchandise for you new business.
But all of these are just the beginning of the excitement that's ahead.
Read on as I present the first of two articles on many of the most important actions you need to take as you prepare to open a dollar store.
· Utilities - with a signed lease will come a defined date when you are responsible for some or all of the utilities.
Contact the appropriate providers of power, heat, telephone, water, garbage and other services before the transfer date occurs.
· Licenses and Permits - Cities, counties, states and even the federal government need to be contacted.
There will be a Federal ID number for your business.
You will need to complete appropriate paperwork to obtain permits for some of the site remodeling and improvements.
The list goes on from there.
Most suppliers will require your federal ID information and/or a reseller's license before allowing you to purchase dollar store merchandise at wholesale prices, so don't delay.
· Painting and other improvements - If you are responsible for site improvements and haven't already located your contractors, then this becomes a priority.
After all, major improvement work can delay all other store set-up, decoration, and dollar store merchandise receiving and stocking.

If you are responsible for this, order early.
· Signage - order signs early.
This is especially true if you have a large custom sign or a sign front to have built.
Don't forget to check about the required permits before installing new signs.
There are many other considerations including store fixtures, displays and counters, store supplies and equipment, dollar store merchandise, staffing and even planning your grand opening event.
Start to develop a comprehensive list of actions to take even before you have a negotiated and signed lease.
Just don't take action until the final lease is signed and you have access to the location.
