    Types

    • There are many types of dog whistles available that are made from metal or plastic. They range from a very loud whistle, similar to a referee's whistle, to the "silent dog whistle," which is not actually silent, but produces sound at a frequency that is easier for dogs to hear.

    Uses

    • You can whistle-train your dog to follow your commands, such as calling him to you, sitting or going in a new direction. More advanced commands would include activities like asking him to retrieve items for you.

    Training--Part I

    • You should have a different signal for each command you plan to use. For example you can use a short whistle, long whistle blast or multiple pips. As a reward, you can use pieces of cheese or some treats that he particularly enjoys.

    Training--Part II

    • You might start with teaching your dog to come to you when you call her before progressing to other commands. Blow the whistle signal that you have chosen, then offer her a reward. Do this several times, each time offering the reward. Soon she will learn to come to you when she hears the signal. This should be done in different places, at different distances and even out of her sight until she has thoroughly learned the command.

    Additional Commands

    • After your dog has learned the first command, you can work with him on different signals for other desirable actions.
