    New York City

    • New York City offers plenty of activities and attractions on an average day, but it becomes magical during the holidays. Start family Christmas traditions around the lighting of the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center. Bring the kids to visit Santa at Macy's and follow it up with some ice skating at the Pond at Bryant Park or the ever-popular Rockefeller Center. Mom might have more fun with the holiday window displays up and down Fifth Avenue, but the entire family will enjoy watching the Radio City Hall Christmas Spectacular with the famous Rockettes.

The Plaza (theplaza.com) is the go-to hotel for the Christmas holidays in New York City. The hotel's elegance and history will satisfy the adults, and the kids will feel special in the hotel featured in the movie "Home Alone."

    Polar Express, New Hampshire

    • Each Christmas, the residents of Lincoln and North Conway, New Hampshire, recreate the magical children's book "The Polar Express." Even adults will enjoy the evening train ride, the Christmas elves and the visit with Santa Claus.

The Green Granite Inn and Conference Center (greengranite.com) offers special Polar Express packages along with oversized open-hearth fireplaces, casual dining and rooms large enough to accommodate families. Daytime activities include downhill or cross-country skiing, ice skating, snowshoeing, snowmobile tours and sleigh rides.

    Walt Disney World

    • Disney World in Orlando, Florida, provides family entertainment all year round with rides, attractions and characters that we all have grown up with. But the park comes alive at Christmas with many special events including Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party. The entire family will enjoy the lights on the Cinderella Castle, special holiday parade and fireworks extravaganza, magical snowfall on the Magic Kingdom's Main Street and complimentary cookies and hot cocoa. You might even forget that you've left the cold winter behind for a touch of warm Florida weather.

For an outdoors experience, rent a cabin at Disney's Fort Wilderness for the holidays. Cabins are equipped with a grill, outdoor porch, separate bedroom for the kids and galley kitchen. Children will enjoy the nightly bonfire, marshmallow roast and movies under the stars, while mom and dad enjoy some quiet time.
