Build Your Own Boat - Things to Consider in Building the Boat of Your Choice
Contrary to some limiting beliefs, it can be easy to build your own boat. It doesn't require some special skills whatsoever to build a simple boat for your own special use.
You do however, need to have a rundown of things which you should go over in order to successfully finish this sort of project. Some of these things are:
BUDGET
Building a boat yourself is cost effective. That's one of the basic advantage of it. You don't spend as much as buying a ready made boat. However, let's face it, it's not without cost either.
You will need to have a budget you are comfortable spending for this project so you can work with this specific amount in mind. If budget is really of importance to you, it does tend to dictate most aspect of the planning process. Things like materials and boat size will largely depend on the budget you set.
TOOLS
Time to do some inventory of the tools you have in your shed. To build a boat, you don't need some fancy tools. However, this is only true to some specific boat designs.
For example, wood tends to be the easiest material to work with. You only need some basic woodworking tools to build a simple wooden boat. Now, this is clearly not the case with aluminum, for example. With aluminum, you will be needing a welding machine to build it.
SKILLS
As mentioned earlier, it requires nothing fancy to build a boat. But it still does require some basic woodworking skills to get the project finished. And the more comfortable you are handling materials like wood, the more likely you'll finish the project in no time at all.
Furthermore, some boat designs like aluminum for example, requires welding skills for you to build it. So it is quite imperative that you have an overview of the construction process way before you start building the boat.
BOAT PLANS
This is one of the things you can't do without when building your own boat. And you should not settle for just any plan either. You need to choose a plan with consideration to the things I've just enumerated above.
The boat plan must be perfectly suited to your skill level as well as your preference and purposes. It must also have clear and elaborate instruction on how to go about building your own boat. As much as possible, choose a plan that has extensive illustrations and images. This will prove to help understand the instruction clearly.
