The Best Way to Keep Weeds From Growing Under Pine Trees

1). Hoe an area 4 to 6 feet in diameter around the base of your pine.
2). Spread pine bark or pine needles on the bare area you created. If you have a mature pine tree, keep the needles that the plant drops.
3). Build a 3-inch-deep mulch pile with the bark or needles. Spread it across the diameter of the bare ground around the tree. Start the mulch ring 6 inches from the trunk to allow for air circulation. If any weeds sprout in that area, pull them immediately.
4). Refill the mulch pile as the organic matter decomposes. Maintain it at a depth of 3 inches to effectively prevent weeds.
