    Germinating Okra

    • Okra seeds typically are germinated by planting them directly into the ground. The seeds are planted in soil mounds so the plants will not be closer than 12 to 24 inches apart. Some gardeners accelerate germination by soaking the okra seeds overnight before planting.

    Plant Size vs. Garden Spacing

    • Dwarf varieties of okra may grow to be only 2 feet tall. Varieties such as "Aunt Hettie's Red" and "Cow Horn" may grow to be 9 to 10 feet tall. Smaller varieties may be grown more closely spaced (12 to 16 inches). Larger varieties should not be grown closer that 24 inches apart. Adequate spacing gives the plants room to grow without blocking necessary sunlight and inhibits mildew infestation.

    Transplanting

    • Starting okra seeds indoors is not recommended except in regions with very short growing seasons. Transplanted seedlings may fail to thrive unless careful attention is paid to prevent root damage during transplantation.
