How to Protect Shrubbery From Heavy Snow

    • 1). Trim the shrubs prior to snowfall to eliminate any excess that is sticking out further than the rest. Longer branches are more likely to break so cutting them ahead of time helps prevent that possibility. The shrubs will collect less snow if they are smaller.

    • 2). Wrap ties of cloth or nylon around the shrub to hold the foliage in closer to the main core. The more the shrub sticks out, the more at risk it is for heavy snow damage. Remove them once the snow season is over. Leaving the cloth or nylon on during the growing season can damage the shrub.

    • 3). Remove snow from the shrubs after every snowfall to eliminate the weight from the branches. Shake the snow off by hand or with a broom, or melt it off with a hairdryer.

    • 4). Prop a wooden support near the middle of a large branch to give it extra support. This helps eliminate the "lever effect" where longer branches are more prone to break due to the extra force the snow puts on its ends.
