Healthy Relationships - 7 Reasons You Hang on to Baggage

103 78
Carrying anger, resentment, guilt, and other issues is a heavy life to live.
May I even call it a miserable life...
at times? Are you tired of hauling that overweight piece of baggage that seems to have become such a part of you? Think about how long you have been pulling that around.
Maybe most of your life.
Are you really going to allow it to effect every relationship? Every job? Every opportunity? Or are you ready to unpack once and for all? When at the airport I look at baggage and wonder what they paid.
I am not very good at picking out expensive luggage.
However, on occasion, I will see a beat up piece of luggage with frayed edges and stains.
I wonder why they do not care.
Then I wonder how long they have had it.
Did it belong to a parent or grandparent first? Is it being passed down through the family? That is often the way it is with baggage.
The true function of baggage is to transport stuff.
It is basically a container of those things with which you have chosen to travel.
Like it or not, you are responsible for the contents remaining in the bag.
You may have been too young when some tragic event happened in your life, but now you must take responsibility for dealing with it.
Why do we hang onto baggage? 1.
It has become such a part of your daily life, you do not identify it as baggage.
2.
It is too difficult to change behaviors.
3.
It is too painful to open the long-hidden past.
4.
It allows you to play the victim role.
5.
It allows you to control and manipulate others.
6.
It may require openness and vulnerability.
7.
It would require forgiveness.
What would really be interesting is to sift through your baggage.
I mean everything - personal things, the good stuff at the bottom, those little things hidden in the pockets, and especially those things with locks.
If this is where you have hesitated in the past, not today.
This is your chance to finally overcome what may have been a long time personal issue.
Or this may your opportunity to overcome a family bondage that has been passed down for generations.
Do this for the sake of you children and grand children.
I'm guessing that the contents of your baggage would tell us a great deal about you.
I know it would.
Actually, I am somewhat of an expert at sifting through people's baggage.
Want to know the kind of fun stuff I have found over the years? Hang on, this could get personal.
