The Powers of Your Subconscious Mind
This weekend I attended a wonderful self-hypnosis course which beautifully complemented my fascination with the human mind.
Through my interest in personal transformation and my work as a coach I have come to see that making conscious changes in your life through willpower is highly overrated and largely ineffective.
In fact you will often hear me say "I don't believe in willpower.
" Despite this I was still shocked to find out that 90% of our minds are subconscious leaving only 10% within our conscious control! Blimey, no wonder so many of us struggle with giving up smoking, losing weight etc.
How many times have I heard self-righteous people condemn overweight people, stating that they "should just exercise and eat healthily?" How many times does the average smoker try and give up? How many gym memberships are not regularly used? The fact is we are conditioned to make changes using just 10% of our mind, this leads to continual failing and for the few that succeed using the conscious mind, the amount of self-discipline it takes doesn't look all that fun to me.
For deep, lasting (and relatively easy) change you have got to use the power of the subconscious mind to help you make changes without the struggle of solely using willpower.
Uncover the unconscious beliefs that control your behaviour and change them to ones that benefit you - it really is as simple as that.
No amount of conscious effort can override a subconscious mind going in the opposite direction.
Or to put it another way 10% of your mind is not going to override 90%, especially if that 90% is hidden from view so you don't actually know what you are dealing with.
This is not to say that the conscious mind is redundant in this process, it too plays it's part but not in the way it is commonly used.
You need to use the conscious mind to make the decision to change and to access your power of will to take the relevant and inspired actions.
Tapping into your subconscious is not as difficult as people think, it's actually very easy.
Your subconscious governs your emotions, creativity, imagination etc so daydreaming and visualisation, meditation, subliminal affirmations, hypnotherapy and guided imagery can be used to reprogramme you at a level where conscious behaviour changes follow suit easily and effortlessly.
What changes are you struggling to make in your life? What have you done consciously to address this area? How have you tapped into your subconscious to help you with this? What are you prepared to do now to utilise this 90% of your mind where change happens easily?
