Ways to Clean Rust Off Aluminum
- Add lemon juice or vinegar with soap and water. The acid in these liquids will brighten the discolored aluminum. Scrub the discolored area with the mixture using a scrub pad designed for pots and pans.
- This cleaner may contain sodium bisulphate, oxalic acid, dilute hdrochloric acid or dilute sulfuric acid. Put on a pair of rubber gloves and use a steel wool pad to scrub away the rust stain. Wear safety goggles to protect eyes from splatter. These acids are all poisonous and can harm skin and eyes. Avoid using toilet bowl cleaner on aluminum items used to cook or eat food.
- The main ingredient in rust removers is oxalic acid. Apply the rust remover, to the rust-stained aluminum, with a steel wool pad. Scrub as needed and thoroughly rinse the aluminum with water after rust comes free. Check for pieces of steel wood clinging to the surface and remove them. If left on, they will rust and re-stain the aluminum.
- Boil tomatoes in a pot and then use the liquid to scrub the aluminum. The acid in the tomatoes will eat at the rust on the aluminum. If the piece of aluminum is small enough, let it soak inside the tomato liquid. Remove it when the rust is gone.
