Define the Skeletal System
- The skeletal system consists of 206 bones. Organs and softer tissues are connected to these bones. Vital organs--such as the brain, lungs and heart--are protected by the skull, sternum and rib cage.
- The skeletal system is divided into two parts; the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. The axial system consists of the bones that support and protect the organs of neck, head and trunk. The appendicular system is made of the bones that hold appendages to axial skeleton.
- The bones within the skeletal system have four categories; short, long, irregular and flat.
- Bones are composed of tissue that is compact or spongy bone. The majority of bones in the skeletal system contain both types.
- Without a skeletal system, you would not be able to stand, walk or even exist. The bones of the skeletal system provide both protection and structure.
