How to Calculate Christmas Lights for a Pine Tree

- 3). Divide the number of lights needed on the tree by the number of lights available on the strings that you have. For example, if you have strings of 100 lights and you need 700 lights on the tree, then you would divide 700 by 100 to require a total of 7 strings of lights on the Christmas tree.
