How to Make a Down Draft Spray Booth

    • 1). Stand a foil-faced insulation panel upright. This is the middle panel. Position a foil-faced panel on each side of the middle panel so the edges meet. These are the side panels. Angle the side panels so they point toward you at approximately a 45-degree angle. Use panels that are 6 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide. This should give you plenty of space to spray.

    • 2). Join the panels together using duct tape.

    • 3). Measure 3 furring strips and cut them to the same length as the width of the panels. If one panel is 4-feet wide, cut 3 4-foot furring strips. Use a bear saw to cut the furring strips.

    • 4). Glue one furring strip to the top edge of the inside of each panel using super glue. Let the glue dry.

    • 5). Lay a foil-faced insulation panel on top of the spray booth to create a ceiling.

    • 6). Position a furnace filter in the middle of the middle panel. Outline the filter with a pencil. Cut along the pencil line with a bear saw to remove a square from the middle panel. Insert the furnace filter into the hole.

    • 7). Open the main garage door (the one which opens when a car enters). Open the garage windows and any other doors. Lay a painter's tarp on the garage floor, near the main door. Place the spray booth on top of the tarp so the side panels angle inward, toward the inside of the garage. The section of the spray booth facing the garage is in the inside.

    • 8). Position two saw horses on the outside of the spray booth, underneath the furnace filter. Lay a sheet of plywood on top of the sawhorses. Sit a box fan on top to the plywood so the fan blows outward, away from the garage. Plug in the fan to a nearby outlet. Turn on the fan when working in the spray booth. Air should enter from the open windows and doors, and flow out through the open main door as it passes through the fan.
