How to Change a Heater Oil Filter
- 1). Turn off the power to the furnace, and close the shut-off valve in the fuel line.
- 2). Place a bucket under the filter, and loosen the top center bolt with a wrench. Remove the filter bowl with your hand by turning it counterclockwise. If you find the bowl difficult to turn, use a filter wrench to apply some leverage.
- 3). Inspect the interior of the bowl for any signs of corrosion or pitting. If the bowl is damaged in any way, replace it with a new matching part.
- 4). Clean the bowl thoroughly with a rag. If it has become particularly dirty, use some solvent to assist with the process.
- 5). Dry the gasket seat in the filter bowl. Do not lubricate the gasket.
- 6). Install a new filter cartridge, and reassemble the filter in the same process through which you removed it.
- 7). Bleed the air from the system as recommended by your fuel pump manufacturer.
