What"s the Secret to Training a Dog to Use a Doghouse?

Your dog has a new dog house.
It may be a weekend construction project where you had to work hard not to swear in front of the kids, or it might be something you picked up at your local big box store.
Maybe you've even tried both.
But the problem is...
you can't get your pup to step paw inside it.
You can see that there must be something needed in training a dog to use a doghouse.
You'd think she would love it - a place to keep dry from the rain and protected from the wind, yet she doesn't use it.
First of all, don't take it personally.
You know the expression, "Build it and they will come"? Well, it doesn't apply here.
Let's take a look at some reasons why your pooch might not be that into her new doghouse.
  • It doesn't have a familiar smell.
  • It's not where she wants to be.
Her idea of house and home is the one you currently live in.
  • It's a scratchy, hard surface and there are a few nails sticking out.
  • No insulation may mean it's just as cold inside the doghouse as out, and may even seem colder.
  • There are no pieces of home inside it; no raggedy security blanket and no old favorite chew toy.
  • It's tucked around the corner where she doesn't have a doorway view of what's going on in her world.
She wants to see the yard to protect it from squirrels and watch the backdoor to see if a family member is coming out.
These are some of the reasons your dog might not like her new home.
Once you resolve these issues, then you can work on training your dog to use the doghouse.
