    • 1). Contact an Air National Guard recruiter if you are not currently a member of the ANG. Tell him that you wish to enlist and receive GI Bill benefits to pay for your education. Your recruiter will walk you through the enlistment process, which includes taking the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, submitting to a police background check and receiving a military physical. Once you have completed your ANG training and become a member of the ANG, you are eligible to receive GI Bill benefits.

    • 2). Contact your ANG unit's Readiness NCO if you are currently a member of the ANG. Tell him you wish to take advantage of your GI Bill and your GI Bill Kicker to offset your tuition costs. Your Readiness NCO will advise you whether your state offers additional tuition assistance to ANG members. Many states do.

    • 3). Call the Veterans Affairs office at the institution you wish to attend. Let the VA representative at the school know that you want to apply as an ANG member and that you will be using your GI Bill benefits. If you are also using state benefits, tell the representative. Even though you are not a veteran because you are still serving, the VA office will handle your application and enrollment paperwork.

    • 4). Enroll in courses that are covered by your GI Bill. The GI Bill only covers courses that are required by your degree plan. For example, if a course in underwater basket weaving does not fill a requirement that will help you earn a law degree, the GI Bill will not cover the bill for that course and you will be required to pay out-of-pocket.

    • 5). Attend all your courses and maintain a grade of "C" or better. The GI Bill does not cover expenses for classes in which you receive a D or fail.
