Why Meditation?
People the world over have turned to meditation for thousands of years.
Why? What does meditation provide us with as humans that simply co-existing on planet earth might not be able to provide us with? The clue is in the meditation itself.
Imagine, if you will, life one thousand years ago.
The average person lived a very hard and short life.
There were no luxuries unless you were the master of your kingdom.
Yet, there always seemed to be time for family and self.
There were no airplanes or business trips half way around the world where your hosts spoke a language you did not understand.
Now fast forward to your life today.
There is seldom any time for relaxing, time to discover your purpose, time to listen to your children.
It is my belief that meditation is more important to our society now than it ever has been.
Without peace, calm and understanding we are creating generations of self-indulgent adults who will not grasp the importance of being a contributing part of their world.
We must not lose the battle and then wonder in our old age where our lives went and where we went wrong.
Meditating can help with both physical and mental weaknesses.
By becoming more in tune with your body there are certain aspects of its overall health that you may learn to control.
For example, people who meditate have been able to lower their cholesterol and blood pressure levels.
Addicts who adopt a meditative lifestyle should find it easier to quit and remain clean and/or sober indefinitely.
A person who meditates, I believe, becomes more whole the longer they stay with it.
Meditation provides a stronger focus with an ability to concentrate.
Clearer thinking can and will reduce stress and anxiety by its very nature.
The more easily we can tackle a problem the less stress it will cause us.
People who meditate seem to have greater creativity and athletes are better able to perform their particular skills.
Sports teams have been known to bring meditation experts into the locker room to help players relax and focus on their play.
Most importantly, for us as individuals, is the ability meditation has to build up our self-acceptance and self-understanding.
By looking inward and having that awareness of what makes us who we are we can be proud of ourselves and true to our being.
When you love and accept yourself for who you are you can then share that love and express it with your friends and family.
Your relationships will grow stronger.
You will experience more joy and spontaneity as you take control of your thoughts and emotions through meditation.
You cannot get around this last reason for why you should include meditation in your daily life.
Meditation is a spiritual process.
By calming your mind and your body you are connecting your spirit with your physical being.
This process may well provide you with a deeper sense of meaning and purpose and with that comes a spiritual awakening.
I urge you to consider meditating as a way to gain control over your life.
The world, it seems, is spiraling out of wack most days.
You don't need to be part of the chaos.
As little as five minutes a day of meditation will calm you and give you the peace and focus you need to lead a fulfilling life.
