In addition to technique, posture also plays an important role in meditation.
When you meditate in a proper posture, you feel more energetic, sanguine, optimistic and confident.
Each session rejuvenates your mind and body, and dispels stress, tension, negativity, pessimism and skepticism.
Meditation posture is not all about sitting comfortably with your eyes closed and hands in your lap.
It is concerned with managing the different parts of the body in such a manner that your hyperactive mind and body calms down quickly, and you reach the optimal meditative stage speedily.
Here are a few tips on managing your body parts properly while meditating.
How to control your eyes? During meditation, you can choose to keep your eyes open, half open or closed.
If you are using the concentrative technique, then you would have to keep your eyes open and focus your attention on an object like the flame of a candle, statue or building.
On the contrary, if you are using the non-concentrative technique, then you would have to keep your eyes closed.
In this way, it will be easier for you to divert your attention inwards.
If you are not easily distracted by the activities taking place around you, then you can keep your eyes half open.
In such a condition, if you feel restless, you can close your eyes, or if you feel sleepy, you can open your eyes.
What to do with your head? Proper meditation posture means, proper position of the head, which should neither be bowed forward nor be arched backward.
In the former case, the likelihood of falling asleep is quite high, while in the latter case, your mind as well as the body will remain restless and alert.
Your head should be perfectly aligned with your neck and back.
In fact, when head is positioned properly, then the line joining your ears would run parallel to your shoulders.
Which is the appropriate position for your hands? While meditating, your hands should be placed on the knees with the tips of the thumbs touching the tips of the forefingers.
You can also place your hands in your lap.
If you wish, you can also keep your hands in the prayer posture.
However, a majority of people usually position their hands in this manner before or after a meditation session to express gratitude to the Almighty.
Yet another good position for the hands is below the navel.
You have to place your left hand approximately four-fingers width below the navel.
Place your right hand over your left hand, and position your thumbs such that they form a triangle.
How to manage your tongue, jaws and mouth? You should keep your tongue against the palate.
Instead of being occupied with your inner thoughts, this tongue-position will help you to concentrate.
Tension has a tendency to manifest itself in the jaw region of your mouth.
So, keep this area relaxed.
Allow your lower jaws to droop down.
Your mouth will open a bit, but you will have a soft, relaxed expression on your face, which is pre-requisite for meditation.
