Travelling to other destinations whether in your own country or travelling abroad can involve unexpected delays or stressful situations especially when it comes to clearing airport security checks.
What can help you to prepare ahead of time when packing so as to avoid possible delays or problems? Following these top three suggestions can help to ease the process.
Follow the 3-1-1 Rule established by Transportation Security Administration:
  • 3 ounce or smaller containers of liquid or gel allowed.
More than 3 ounces permitted only in checked luggage
  • 1 quart-size clear plastic, zip-top bag holding 3 ounces or smaller containers.
The bag limits the total volume allowed per person
  • 1 bag per traveler to be placed in the security bin.
    Isolating liquids speed screening.
Pack an organized Carry-on-Bag
  • Pack an organized carry-on-bag using layers - a layer of clothes, then electronics, more clothes, and then any heavier items.
This will help security officers see what is in your bag.
Innocent items can actually appear to be potential threats in an X-ray image, simply by the way they are packed
  • When possible, do not pack oversized electronics in checked baggage.
Small electronics such as iPods, can remain in carry-on-baggage
  • When in doubt, leave it out.
Unsure if an item is prohibited or not? Travelers should place such items in their checked baggage or leave them at home.
  • Consider "checkpoint friendly" laptop bags
Transportation Security Administration began allowing "checkpoint friendly" computer bags, providing they meet their guidelines.
These new bags are designed to let the traveler pass through checkpoints without having to remove their laptops.
If you intend to use a "checkpoint friendly" laptop bag, make sure to check that:
  • Your laptop bag has a designated laptop-only section that you can lay flat on the X-ray belt
  • There are no metal snaps, zippers or buckles inside, underneath or on top of the laptop-only section
  • There are no pockets on the inside or outside of the laptop-only section
  • There is nothing in the laptop compartment other than the laptop
  • You must completely unfold your bag so there is nothing obstructing the laptop-only section, allowing the bag to lie flat on the X-ray belt.
Being prepared makes sense.
Each time Transportation Security searches a carry-on bag it slows down the line.
Practicing the 3-1-1 Rule, following the suggestions for packing an organized carry on bag and considering using a "checkpoint friendly" laptop bag will do much to ensure a faster and easier checkpoint experience therefore a more enjoyable travelling experience.
