Your film career consists of the succession of jobs or occupations that you have, as well as the levels you achieve in those positions.
Advancing in your film career consists of several steps. I have outlined some for you below:

(1)Write down 10 goals you want to achieve in film career in the next 10 years.
(2)Do one thing everyday that will move you forward towards your goals.
(3)Pick a mentor, learn every thing about them and model their success. (i.e.George Lucas)
(4)Associate with film industry people who are more successful, more experienced and smarter than you.
(5)Read the industry trades every week. (Playback, Hollywood Reporter, Variety)
(6)Be patience and persistent. If it was easy, everyone would be making a living as a screenwriter, film director or film producer.
(7)For writers: Write everyday.
(8)Be 100% committed to your career. Make it the top priority in your life.
(9)Spend one hour everyday reading about the art and business of film-making. Every thing counts. Read books, magazines, blogs, websites.
(10)Help and share your industry knowledge with other filmmakers. Remember karma, what goes around comes around.
(11)For producers: Think like an entrepreneur. Master the art of selling and marketing.
(12)For directors: Have a solid 2 to 3 minute demo reel of your best work available. Both on DVD and online.
(13)Post your films online for others to see.
(14)Surround yourself with only positive people who breath life and encouragement into your goals and dreams.
(15)Review your written career goals daily.
(16)Watch at least one new movie each week
(17)Go to Amazon.com, type into the search box your profession and read the top 5 books that are listed. (i.e. Directors can type in film-making/film director/filmmaker)
(18)Make a list of the top 10 industry players in your profession and strive to make the list within the next 10 years.
(19)Remain flexible and open minded. Your big breakthrough opportunity could be right in front of you.
(20)Devote at least 6 days a week towards building your career.
(21)If you skipped over tip #1. Stop reading right now. Get a pen and paper and write down 10 career goals you want to achieve.
(22)Be willing to fail and makes mistakes. Remember, mistakes are just opportunities to learn and start over again with more wisdom.
(23)Always work with the best people you know or can afford. First-rate men hire first-rate men; second-rate men hire third-rate men.

(25)Become a good networker. Make time for people and look for ways to support them. This will make you naturally attractive.
(26)Have good character. One aspect of character is to show honesty and integrity in what you do. Being reliable is important in gaining respect and advancement.
(27)Believe in yourself to take risks. If you are not risking, you are not growing.
(28)Take care of your health: Maintaining great physical condition allows your body and mind to work more efficiently.
(29)Do excellent work.This may seem obvious, but when you have settled into your role, you may begin to let some responsibilities slide. Show up on time and work hard for your full shift, because really, no matter how quickly and easily you can do your job, no one is going to promote someone who looks like a slacker.
