Most women at some point live with the unsightly orange-peel textured skin that cellulite produces on the abdomen, thighs, hips and buttocks. Hormones, genetics, diet, lifestyle and the types of clothing worn may influence whether someone has cellulite--and how much. Treatment methods that include creams and massage promise to reduce cellulite.

    Mechanical

    • During an Edermologie treatment, a technician massages the skin with a wand that features a combination of rollers and suction to smooth cellulite. The manipulation allows stretching of connective tissues, restoring circulation and encouraging fluid exchange. The increased blood and metabolic flow returns the fat cells to their normal shape and size, resulting in a smoother appearance of the skin. Maximize the results from this mechanical method of cellulite reduction by eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water. In 2010, a single treatment with Endermologie cost between $50 and $70. You need continuous sessions to maintain the smoother appearance.

    Light Treatments

    • Treatments such as Velasmooth and Velashape use a combination of infra-red light and radio frequency along with suction and rollers to target cellulite. These treatments break down the bands of connective tissue that hold fat, reducing it and the rippled look of cellulite. When the Weill Medical College conducted a study of Velasmooth, 100 percent of the participants showed an improvement in cellulite. Have between four and 12 of these treatments to see a significant reduction in cellulite. In 2010, a single Velashape or Velasmooth treatment cost about $90.

    Creams and Lotions

    • Creams to reduce cellulite contain ingredients that tone and tighten the skin, boost fat metabolism and reduce fluid retention. One of the most commonly used ingredients, caffeine, reduces fluid in the body's subcutaneous tissues. Creams and serums that contain alpha-hydroxy acids, like glycolic or lactic acid, thin the outer layers of the skin, therefore reducing the appearance of cellulite. Bladderwrack, another ingredient used in anti-cellulite formulations, encourages the breakdown of fat cells. Try the products at your own risk. According to Dr. Lisa M. Donofrio, an assistant professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine, and Tulane University School of Medicine, says there is no scientific proof that any of the creams work. Purchase creams and lotions for as little as $5 in a drug store or spend over $100 on creams in department stores or skin care centers.

    Exercise

    • A combination of cardiovascular exercise, such as walking and jogging and resistance training, helps reduce fat and the appearance of cellulite. Do leg curls and squats, which metabolize fat in the thighs, hips and buttocks. Pay attention to consistency in exercise more than the amount of resistance you use.

    Diet

    • A healthy diet and regular exercise can reduce the appearance of cellulite. Stay way from smoking since this slows the lymphatic system. Avoid eating large amounts of fat and carbohydrates and salt. Instead take in more fiber. Eating plenty of vegetables and fruits adds fiber to a diet. Eat five to six small meals a day and drink plenty of water to help flush out waste.
