Plastic Surgery Following Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a natural healthy process that many women aspire to.
It is associated with profound changes to the body both during the pregnancy and immediately afterwards.
Many women never fully recover their pre pregnancy shape, especially if they have had several pregnancies.
For many women this is not a problem and they lead a full and healthy lifestyle.
Some women do have concerns about their bodies after having children and breast feeding and may consider having plastic surgery after pregnancy.
The most common requests from patients are for 'tummy tucks', breast enlargement or lift, and liposuction.
Certain procedures, such as abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and breast reduction/ uplift surgery are best performed once a mother has completed her family.
This gives the best long term results.
A subsequent pregnancy following these procedures will not cause any undue harm to mother or child but may 'undo' the effects of the previous surgery.
Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly requested post pregnancy procedures.
Many women experience loss of breast tissue following pregnancy, especially if they have breast fed their child.
A combination of careful patient selection, preoperative planning, surgical technique and modern implant technology means that high long term satisfaction rates are achievable.
The procedure is usually requested by younger patients who feel that their breasts have never fully developed and by women who have completed their families and are looking to restore shape and lost volume.
Loss of breast volume may also be associated with increased droopiness (ptosis) of the breasts.
Mild breast ptosis can usually be treated with breast implants alone.
More severe ptosis with loss of breast volume requires a combined breast uplift and implant procedure (augmentation mastopexy).
Breasts become saggy or droopy as a result of the natural aging process.
This is often exacerbated after pregnancy or after significant weight loss.
Breast ptosis is characterised by descent of the normal nipple position and the breast tissue.
This results in a lack of fullness in the upper parts of the breast and a loss of the youthful appearance of the breast.
Additionally the nipple points downwards to varying degrees.
Breast ptosis can affect younger women as well.
The effects of excess abdominal tissue can be exacerbated by caesarian section scars and stretch marks.
Stretch marks can partly be removed only as part of an abdominoplasty procedure.
It is important to be aware that any stretch marks above the belly button will always remain and sometimes can be made worse.
Cosmetic surgery following pregnancy is ideally performed at least 12-18 months after pregnancy or breast feeding (in the case of breast surgery).
Procedures such as abdominoplasty and breast reduction have recovery periods of up to 6 weeks and it is important to bear this in mind when there are young children to look after.
