    Remedies for Symptoms

    • Because cataracts usually develop and worsen very slowly, the first approach is to manage the symptoms. Wearing glasses or contact lenses can greatly reduce the visual problems associated with cataracts. Increasing light helps as well, as does using a magnifying glass when viewing very small objects. If glare is a problem, use sunglasses; prescription sunglasses are especially useful in terms of driving. Visit your eye doctor regularly in order to monitor your vision and the possible progression of cataracts.

    Surgery

    • The only real cure for cataracts is surgery. During surgery (which is done on an outpatient basis), the lens is removed and replaced with an implant. Most doctors recommend surgery when other remedies aren't helping and your vision problems are interfering significantly with your normal activities. Sometimes only one eye has a cataract and requires surgery. In cases where both eyes require surgery, most doctors usually wait 4 to 8 weeks between the surgery for the first eye and the surgery for the other eye. Surgery for cataracts improves the vision in about 90 percent of patients.

    Follow-Up

    • If you have surgery to remedy your cataracts, you should follow several steps afterwards in order to maximize the benefit of your procedure. Alleviating the problem of cataracts surgically requires proper healing. You may have to wear protective eye wear and put special drops in your eyes for several days following the surgery. Refrain from lifting heavy objects and bending over for approximately the first week following surgery. Visit your doctor when she recommends it in order to ensure that your eyes are doing well after the procedure.
