How to Lengthen PVC Pipe
- 1). Turn off the water valve supplying water to the PVC pipe you need to lengthen. If you are working on a PVC drain line, you can skip this step, but make sure that no one uses any fixture connected to the PVC drain line while you are lengthening the PVC pipe.
- 2). Align the blade of the hacksaw with the back of the PVC fitting or PVC cap located at the point you will be extending the PVC pipe. Using the backside of the fitting as a guide will give you a square cut on the end of the PVC pipe.
- 3). Cut through the PVC pipe and discard the PVC fitting or PVC cap, then use the emery cloth to remove any large burrs left from the cutting process.
- 4). Apply PVC primer to the outside of the PVC pipe and the inside socket of the PVC coupling with the brush attached to the lid of the PVC primer.
- 5). Coat the primed surface of the PVC pipe and the PVC coupling with PVC cement.
- 6). Slide the cement-coated socket of the coupling over the cement-coated end of the PVC pipe, turn the coupling 90-degrees and hold for 30 to 40-seconds to allow the PVC cement to bond the PVC pipe and PVC fitting.
- 7). Repeat the procedure to attach the length of PVC pipe into the other socket of the PVC coupling to finish lengthening the PVC pipe.
