- 1). Cut the mountain climbing rope in the length that you would like the leash to be. Many dog leashes are 6 to 8 feet in length; however, dogs that have a wilder temperament may do better with shorter leashes while those that are well-behaved may prefer longer leashes that allow them to roam as they please.
- 2). Light a cigarette lighter and briefly hold the ends of the rope to the flame; the heat will melt the loose fibers at the ends of the rope together and prevent them from unraveling.
- 3). Tie a sturdy rock-climbing knot at each end of the rope. The specific knot depends on your preference, the weight of your dog and its activity level. Recommended rock-climbing knots are the bowline, figure eight loop, or, for extra security, the double figure eight loop, as are explained on the ABC-Of-Rock Climbing website.
- 4). Attach a metal D clip, such as those used in climbing, to the loop in one of the knots at the end of the rope. The metal D clip is used to attach the leash to your dog’s collar. The knot on the other end of the rope is used as a handle for you to hold.
