When starting a building project you need to ensure you have a good supply of building materials. It's a good idea to find a network of distributers so you can shop around for a good price. By having a good number of suppliers you'll create a safety net in case one distributor can't meet your requirements or demand.

Finding good supplies is crucial to any building project and can affect the completion date. A reliable distributor will be able to give accurate delivery estimates and can improve the efficiency of the overall project. If you can't rely on your supplies because the quality is poor or they don't arrive in time; your building construction may be delayed.

This article will cover 7 steps you can take to finding good supplies. It's not too difficult to form a relationship with a reliable distributor and have good rapport with a number of suppliers.   • What do you need?
    Firstly, what supplies do you actually need? Timber, steel, concrete, cement etc? Make sure you're using the right materials for the job.   • How much do you need?
    Now you know which materials are needed you must calculate how much is required. If you don't have any experience in measuring quantities of building materials you may need to ask an expert. Don't just estimate your requirements as you may end up with far too much or too little.

  • What's your budget?
    Having worked out what materials you need and how much you need; what's your budget? The best way to work out your budget is to ask for quotes from suppliers. However, at this stage, we just want to know what prices to expect. That way you can have a rough idea of how much you should be spending. If a highly reputable distributor offers you a high price you can always take it if the added peace-of-mind is worth it.

    Now you know what you need, how much of it you need and what price to expect you need to come up with a list of distributors to contact. Try searching online for suppliers of the materials you need.

  • Ask around for recommendations
    Pick up the phone book and ask around. There are many organisations in place to offer advice and give recommendations. Ask your friends or work associates who they used for building construction products.

  • Ask for quotes
    Once you have a good list of distributors for building supplies; ask for quotes. By this stage you should have a rough idea of how much to expect. If the price is too low or too high; ask why this is.

  • Create good rapport
    Get to know more than one distributor. You never know when you might need to contact more than one building material suppliers.
