How to Donate to a Corporation

    • 1). Do basic market and social research. This will tell you what needs are most pressing in your area. It also will show you what corporations provide goods or services that align with your ideals and philosophies. Inquiring with religious leaders and hospitals is a good way to start, although you also can get information from your local chamber of commerce and health department.

    • 2). Make a list of the corporations that have peaked your donation interest. Get their contact information from the corporations' websites or the phone book.

    • 3). Call the corporations to which you may donate and ask to speak to a human resources or public relations representative. Ask the representative the specific procedures for donation, as well as the types of donations the corporation accepts. Some corporations may accept monetary donations only, while others will accept physical items or services ("gifts in kind"), depending on the corporation's objectives. There may be donation forms for you to fill out, and you'll need to find out exactly where to send your donation and who will handle the contribution.

    • 4). Arrange for the donation with the contribution manager indicated by the HR/PR representative for the corporation. If you're dropping off items or providing services, the manager will set up a specific date and time for the donation. If you're giving money, the contribution manager will accept the funds. You may be able to make financial donations online, depending on whether the corporation allows for electronic donations via their website.

    • 5). Get a receipt for the donation, or save the thank you letter the corporation sends you. If you're corporation is nonprofit, you can deduct your donation on your taxes. The receipt or letter will verify the deduction is legitimate.
