If you have just brought an older dog into your home, then it might well be that it needs to be housebroken.
If the dog starts going to the bathroom inside the house, then this could be for a few reasons.
First of all it could simply be that the dog has never been trained properly, and secondly that it has gone through some stressful circumstances in its life that have led to it going to the toilet inside the house.
As such you will need to train the dog yourself.
Here are ways to housebreak an older dog.
There are three times of the day that a dog would usually go to the toilet.
This will be in the morning when you first get up, in the evening before they go off to sleep, and about 30 minutes to an hour straight after they had eaten.
These will therefore be the times when you have to watch out specifically for them going to the toilet.
It is a good idea therefore to start taking the dog out at the times mentioned above.
When you do take the dog out and they are correct in that using the toilet outside of the house as they should do, then praise them by giving them a treat and patting them on the head.
When the dog is inside the house and make sure that you contain it within certain areas of the house and shut off all places such as the living areas and bedrooms.
You should also keep the animal in your sight at all times when you are nearby.
When you do take out your dog and they fail to defecate or urinate as you might expect them to, it is going to be important for you to bring them back inside and then take them back out 20 to 30 minutes afterwards.
It's also important to establish a feeding schedule for the animal.
Feed them at regular times of the evening, and in the morning if you desire to do so.
Ensure that you keep to the schedule and that you take the animal out side as said above 30 minutes to an hour after each feeding.
If the dog does end up going inside, then you should have some proper methods of punishment ready to use.
These should not be too harsh, as this will not help matters at all.
If you do these things your dog should be housebroken in no time.
