How to Paint Metal Rust

    • 1). Put on safety eyewear and gloves. Use the wire brush to scrape away loose particles of metal rust. Scrape thoroughly until most of the loose metal rust is removed. Use the 80- to 120-grit sandpaper to remove any remaining loose metal rust. Use the 80- to 120-grit sandpaper to smooth any jagged or bumpy rusted areas.

    • 2). Use degreaser to clean away any grease or chemicals from the metal surface. Use warm, soapy water to clean the metal surface. Allow the metal surface to dry completely before continuing.

    • 3). Open the container of Rust-Oleum primer. Use an oil-based paintbrush to apply the primer to the metal surface. Allow the surface to dry for about an hour or two. Apply additional to the rusted areas. Allow the surface to dry for about an hour or two.

    • 4). Clean the paintbrush with mineral spirits. Massage the mineral spirits into the bristles of the brush. Repeat this step at least three times to ensure that all of the primer has been removed.

    • 5). Open the container of Rust-Oleum paint. Use the cleaned oil-based paintbrush to apply the paint to the metal surface. Allow the surface to dry for about an hour or two. Apply another coat if necessary.
