Surfer dude is a story about a surfer who returns to his home town. His stay is however disrupted by a reality TV show and a complete lack of waves. It's a story you've probably not seen before. But is Surfer dude a movie you'll want to see?
Surfer dude is your typical surfer movie. It has a weak story, and it's only special effect is showing unrealistic fit bodies with the typical characters. You have the weird guy, a small Mexican kid and a smooth business man who always gets what he wants. These characters don't go really deep but luckily the great acting performance of most of the cast makes them believable, so you probably won't feel disturbed by the shallowness of the characters. Especially lead actor Matthew McConaughey puts in a solid performance as the "weird" likeable surfer dude.
Unfortunately the acting performances can't cover the bad writing. The story feels boring, inconsistent and most viewers will feel confused and might question where they are actually looking at. This includes a weak plot that happens pretty suddenly, and extreme boring scenes mostly about the lack of waves.
So is everything bad about surfer dude? Well most is. The video quality and sound quality is okay, no real problems there. Effects (the few) shown in the movie look real. But those just can't outweigh the huge amount of bad points like the story, many pointless scenes and an uninspiring plot.
When you reach the point in the movie just after the plot you might notice this sudden thought rushing in your brain. 'Have I really watched 80 minutes for that?' And that's the problem with Surfer dude, there just isn't a real reason to watch this movie. Even if you like surfing because here's a hint: there isn't much surfing in this film.
