    • 1). Select one of the essay topics. Choose a topic that you can readily answer based on your personal knowledge or life experiences. Pick a subject for which you can provide examples or details to support your thesis statement.

    • 2). Take a few minutes to brainstorm. Before you begin writing, jot down your ideas and make an outline to help you organize your thoughts. Creating an outline also will help you develop your thesis statement and supporting examples. You will not be graded on your outline.

    • 3). Plan your essay. If you are going to write a classic five-paragraph essay, your piece should consist of an introductory paragraph -- which should include your thesis statement -- a separate paragraph for each of your three supporting points, and a conclusion. You are not required to write a five-paragraph essay to pass the test. If you are comfortable using another writing format, such as narrative, that is acceptable, as long as your paper is well-written and meets all test requirements.

    • 4). Begin writing your essay. As you write, keep in mind the time. Give yourself about 35 to 40 minutes to compose your essay, and allow time after you finish writing to proofread your work.

    • 5). Write a compelling introduction. The readers who will be scoring your essay will be grading numerous other tests along with yours. A provocative introduction will grab their attention.

    • 6). Develop the body of your essay. Devote one paragraph to each of your supporting points. Remember to treat each paragraph like a mini thesis: Begin with a topic sentence then describe your supporting point in depth.

    • 7). Write your concluding paragraph. Transition smoothly from your previous paragraph and re-state your thesis statement without repeating it word for word as you wrote it in your introduction. Don't panic if you begin to run out of time and can't develop a substantial conclusion. If the rest of your essay is well-crafted, a brief conclusion will suffice.

    • 8). Proofread your work. Allow time to review your essay for any spelling, grammar or other mistakes. You will be allowed to use a dictionary during the final 15 minutes of test-taking time, but you must bring your own.
