How to Repair Hunter Underground Sprinkler Heads
- 1). Turn the Hunter sprinkler heads on and observe their operation. This will help you to decide what repair is necessary.
- 2). Look at the flow of water from the sprinkler heads. If it is restricted or less than usual, see the section titled, "Cleaning the Filter." Changes to the sprinkler's watering radius or distance may require adjustments under the section "Changing the Radius." For gear or rotary sprinklers that move when in operation, look at the sprinkler's arc or rotation. See "Arc Adjustments" for corrections. Hunter underground sprinklers that are missing a nozzle or have a nozzle damaged beyond repair will require the steps under "Nozzle Replacement."
- 3). Grab the body of the sprinkler heads and make sure they are facing the desired watering area. Contact with lawn equipment and other elements can knock a sprinkler out of alignment.
- 1). Unscrew the cap on the sprinkler's body.
- 2). Remove the internal riser. Use needle-nose pliers to remove the drain-check valve if the sprinkler has one.
- 3). Use pliers to grab the large rib inside the filter screen and pull. Flush the filter screen with water and flush the internal riser and body with water. You can also use an old toothbrush to clean the filter screen.
- 1). Insert the steel hex end of a Hunter wrench into the sprinkler's radius-adjustment screw above the sprayer opening.
- 2). Turn the adjustment screw as needed to change the radius by 25%. Turning the screw clockwise will decrease the watering radius. Turning the screw counter-clockwise will increase the watering radius.
- 3). Replace the nozzle if a larger or smaller watering radius is needed. A larger nozzle will provide a larger radius. To replace the nozzle, see "Nozzle Replacement."
- 1). Find the fixed right edge. With the sprinkler on, grab the turret and turn it clockwise. It may be necessary to turn the turret in the opposite direction and then to the right if you encounter any resistance. When the turret stops, you have found the right edge.
- 2). Find the left edge by turning the sprinkler's turret counter-clockwise. The left edge can be adjusted by turning the arc-adjustment screw on top of the sprinkler. Holding the sprinkler turret at the fixed right edge, insert the plastic key end of a Hunter wrench into the socket adjustment on top of the sprinkler.
- 3). Turn the Hunter wrench clockwise to increase the sprinkler's arc. To decrease the arc, turn the Hunter wrench counter-clockwise. Each full turn increases the arc by 90 degrees. When the wrench stops turning or you hear a ratcheting sound, you have reached the maximum arc of 360 degrees or the minimum arc of 40 degrees.
- 1). Insert the plastic key end of the Hunter wrench into the sprinkler's lifting socket. Turn the wrench 90 degrees to pull the riser up and access to the nozzle.
- 2). Using the steel hex key of the Hunter wrench, turn the radius-adjustment screw counter-clockwise to remove the screw.
- 3). Pull on the sprinkler's nozzle "ears" with a pair of needle-nosed pliers to remove the nozzle. Insert the new nozzle and the radius-adjustment screw.
- 4). Turn the radius-adjustment screw clockwise with the Hunter wrench. The threads of the screw should go between the nozzle ears.
