How to Clean a Drainage
- 1). Remove the drain cover if you are able to. Some models can be popped or twisted off.
- 2). Insert a small scoop into the drain and use it to remove any sludge or hardened debris that is reachable.
- 3). Plug the drain and fill the sink or bathtub with hot water and few drops of dish detergent. Once the basin is full, turn off the water and unplug the drain to allow the hot water to run down through the drain. The combination of heat, pressure and detergent can remove deposits that have built up. If it is a floor drain, spray it with a water hose to force hot water down it.
- 4). Pour a cup of baking soda down the drain and follow it with three cups of boiling water. This helps to further clear the drain. Follow the water with one cup of vinegar as well for best results.
- 5). Insert a straightened wire coat hanger down the drain if there is still a clog to try to dislodge it.
