How to Unbolt Hard to Remove Bolts
- 1). Clean the area around the hard to remove bolt with cleaner and rags.
- 2). Spray the bolt and surrounding area with penetrating lubricant. Let this soak in for about 15 minutes or so. Adjust the wrench so it fits snugly around the nut and unscrew counterclockwise.
- 3). Saw off the nut at the opposite end of the bolt heat using a hacksaw. Start at the base of the nut and begin moving the saw in a back-and-forth pattern. Apply steady pressure as you saw until the saw goes through the other side of the nut.
- 4). Apply heat with a hand-held torch to the nut. This causes the nut to expand, allowing it to be removed easier.
- 5). Split the nut holding the bolt in place with a nut splitter. Hold the open end of the splitter over the nut and hand tighten the crank on the end until the metal spike in the splitter is tight against the nut. Take a wrench and begin tightening the crank at the end of the splitter. This will drive the spike in the splitter into the nut, cracking it apart.
