Age spots, liver spots, sun spots, call them by whichever name you like, but as you age, and particularly if you are fair skinned you will develop these annoying blemishes.
They appear as yellowish-brown flat pots that look like large freckles.
They are thought to be caused by various reasons, aging, too much sun and impaired liver function, hence the different names.
OK so we have age spots but what can we do to get rid of them.
There are many commercial products on the market that purport to fade these blemishes in days; unfortunately they do not live up to their advertisements.
Many of these commercially produced products have ingredients in them that in actual fact can harm the skin.
For example Mineral oil, sounds good, but no - it is also known as paraffin wax, liquid paraffin and petrolatum - this last ingredient is derived from petrol.
What mineral oil does is stays on the surface of the skin and stops it from breathing.
Therefore why do companies use this ingredient in their products because it is good for our skin, no because it is very cheap! There are other ingredients in commercially produced skin care products that also have harmful and toxic possibilities.
If you do not want to go down the 'make your own' route then make sure that when you buy commercial products you take a good hard look at the ingredients.
If the product contains collagen, elastin in large percentages, then these are the ones to go for.
The best natural beauty ingredient for fading age spots is extrapone nutgrass root extract which comes from India.
Look for products from the natural beauty range of products that contains this ingredient.
As an Aromatherapist I swear by lavender oil.
If you put two drops of lavender oil in an egg cup, take a cotton bud, dip it in the oil and apply this neat to the age spots night and morning, you will find that this fades the spots very effectively.
This doesn't happen overnight, it will take a few weeks to see results.
Please make sure not to apply the oil to skin that is not blemished.
Another very good method is if you have an aloe vera plant use the juice from inside the plant and rub this into the age spots.
It works.
If you can't get hold of the actual plant, good health shops sell 99.
9% aloe gel, this will also work.
You can also try adding a few drops of lavender oil to the aloe vera gel.
There are many Folk Lore cures for age spots which can be found all over the internet, but I will list a couple here: Apply castor oil on the age spots twice a day, night and morning.
Rub well into the skin.
The blemishes should disappear within a month.
Take a teaspoon of grated horseradish root, ½ teaspoon of fresh lemon juice, ½ teaspoon of vinegar and three drops of rosemary essential oil.
Apply the mixture to the age spots twice a day; this is supposed to lighten the skin.
Avoid all the toxic ingredient in the commercially produced products and do some research to find the natural beauty products using natural ingredients.
