If you have bought a baby or infant car seat, it is most likely it will be accompanied by a manual which will give detailed instructions as to how to fit it in the most appropriate ways to install and maintain it.

It is likely the manufacturer will have put a checklist early on in the contents of the manual which will be a summary of the most important aspects of installation and usage of the baby car seat. It is important to follow these points, and also to keep them as a separate item either in the car or near the car so they can be referred to if and when necessary.

The checklist will be a number of points as to the proper use of the baby seat. It will advise that incorrect use of the baby car seat could lead to the car seat not being a safe place to secure the infant and potentially cause a risk to the life of the baby, if the vehicle were involved in an incident or crash or accident.

To that end is important to read the manual and understand the specifics of what the manufacturer advises you to do.

Most if not all manufacturers will advise you to use the infant car seat in a rear facing manner only. Some manufacturers will advise that it should not be used in the front of the car where there is an airbag fitted to the car vehicle.

This also applies to the back of the car if there are side airbags fitted to the side doors of the car or vehicle. Positioning of the car seat in relation to where airbags are is key, as incorrect placement could lead to death or serious injury to the baby if an airbag expands as a result of an accident or incident.

The baby car seat manufacturers manual will also advise that the child or baby should be comfortably fitted into the car seat and the straps fitted and used in such a way as to make sure the baby or infant is secure.

It is worth advising that infant or babies with special needs, in this context referring to a premature infant or a low birth weight infant or baby, needs special consideration when using a baby seat. It is important to check prior to leaving hospital after birth that the infant or baby is safe to travel in the seat you have available.

This means getting your pediatrician or relevant health practitioner to look at the car seat and assess that it is safe. If the car seat is not appropriate to your baby or infant then do not use it. It is possible to buy what is known as a car bed and this should be used instead.

Baby seats are notoriously difficult to install correctly, or at least a significant number of people find them very difficult to install correctly. It is obviously extremely important for the safety of the baby or infant that they are installed effectively. There is a lot of help available to this end. Make use of the manufacturers manual, and any federal or state authority that can give advice.

There may be a child safety seat inspection station where you live, and if so take full advantage of it and have your baby seat checked. There are also a number of government or state websites that will give specific instructions as to how best install and use a car seat and they should be checked for relevant information wherever possible.
