    • 1). Put items like stuffed animals, soft toys, pillows, draperies and linens in the freezer. Set the temperature at or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius), and freeze for at least 24 hours. Freezing dust mites will cause the mites to rupture and die since their bodies are essentially water.

    • 2). Place larger items, like mattresses and furniture, outside when temperatures reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius). Keep the items in a covered outdoor area like an unheated garage or a porch. As long as the items are kept dry, the freezing temperatures will kill the dust mites.

    • 3). Wash the smaller items in hot water, after freezing them, to remove any remaining allergy-causing residue. The larger items may be vacuumed after freezing, preferably with a HEPA-style vacuum to prevent the release of more allergens into the air.
