Throughout the middle ages people from all over the world have been coming to India. They were drawn by the cultural and economic riches of India. Among those who came to India include Turks, Persians, Portuguese, British, French, and Chinese.

Asian Indians too on their part have immigrated to all parts of the world. It is estimated that approximately 20 to 25 million people of Asian Indian origin live in all parts of the world. In eleven countries there are over a million people of Asian Indian origin and twenty two countries have over a hundred thousand people of Asian Indian origin. At 4 million, neighboring Nepal has the largest population of people of Indian origin, followed by United States of America with 2.8 million and Malaysia with 2.4 million. Countries where people of Asian Indian origin form a substantial part of the local population include Nepal, Malaysia, Burma, Singapore, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, United Kingdom, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname, Fiji, South Africa, Mauritius, Canada and United States of America.

The first Asian Indians arrived in the USA in the late 19th century. After the United States of America passed the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965, there was a wave of Indian immigration to the United States. By 1975, there were one hundred and seventy five thousand Americans of Asian Indian origin. Over the last 35 years there has been a sharp increase in the number of Asian Indian with their population reaching over 2.8 million in 2010.

American universities and the American way of life have attracted some of India's brightest talent. From 2000 to 2009, more Indian students enrolled in US colleges and universities than students from any other country. About 5% of American doctors are of Asian Indian origin. The internet boom has increased both outsourcing and the need for Indian software professionals to work in the US. More H1B (work visas) are allocated to Indians than to professionals from other countries. Given the large number of Indians studying, working and immigrating to the United States of America, there are many immigrant and Hindi Certified Translation service providers who help US visa applicants.

Asian Indians are the richest ethnic minority group in the US. Almost 67% of all adult Asian Indians in the US have a graduate and higher degree. It is estimated that about one third of the engineers in California's Silicon Valley are of Asian Indian origin.

The US states of California, New York, New Jersey, Texas and Illinois have the largest population of Asian Indians.

Famous Asian Indians in the US who have made significant contributions in various fields include Vikram Pandit ( Citibank), Indra Nooyi (Pepsico), Vinod Khosla (Sun), Nikki Haley (Governor of South Carolina), Bobby Jindal (Governor of Louisiana), Ajay Bhatt (computer architect), Fareed Zakaria (political analyst), Salman Rushdie (author), Nora Jones (artist), M Night Shyamalan (director) and Kalpana Chawla (astronaut).
