Instructions to Make Silk Corsages
- Gather your supplies to make the corsage. You'll only need a few silk flowers, depending on how large you want the finished corsage to be. Once you've chosen the main flowers, find a few smaller ones to use as fillers around the large ones. You'll also need a few silk leaves, floral tape, floral wire, a wire cutter, a hot glue gun, decorative ribbon to match the flowers and your sewing scissors. Wire-edged ribbon is the easiest to work with and will give you a very finished look. If you want this to be a wrist corsage, you'll also need about 12 inches of ½-inch wide elastic and a needle and thread.
- Use a wire cutter to cut the stems of the flowers short. Place a length of the floral wire on each stem, and cover the wire with floral tape. This extra step gives the flowers more stability. Decide how you want to position the flowers on the corsage. For a smaller corsage, you can do one large flower in the middle with smaller flowers and leaves around it. For a larger corsage, use three flowers surrounded by smaller ones. An odd number of flowers always looks better than an even amount. Once you have the desired shape, tie the stems together with the wire and then ribbon. Tie the ribbon in a bow with the ends trailing down. For a more secure corsage, use hot glue to help hold the flowers together. Add a few drops of hot glue on the knot of the ribbon to keep it from coming apart.
- For a wrist corsage, there are just a few more steps. Measure the wrist of the person who'll be wearing the corsage and add about ½ inch. Cut the elastic to this measurement, and sew the ends together to make a bracelet. With tiny stitches, sew the corsage securely to the elastic. You can add a few drops of hot glue to make sure the flowers stay on the corsage. For a more elegant look, cover the elastic with ribbon or matching fabric from the wearer's dress.
- It's easy to customize the corsage. For a baby shower, surround a pacifier or tiny baby bottle with silk flowers and leaves. For a homecoming game, use a large traditional yellow mum for the center of the corsage. Add the school letters made out of pipe cleaners.
