Food for Bariatrics
- The first foods allowed on a diet after bariatric surgery are only liquid. Broth, unsweetened juice, milk, strained cream soup and sugar-free gelatin are recommended by the Mayo Clinic.
- Once the liquid portion of the diet is completed, pureed foods may be added. Puree lean meat, vegetables, fruits and egg whites.
- Soft foods will be gradually added into the diet after a few weeks of pureed food. The general rule for this phase of the post-bariatric diet, according to the Mayo Clinic, is if it can be mashed with a fork, it can be eaten.
- Typically, eight weeks after surgery, solid foods may be added into the diet. Make sure to choose foods rich in vitamins and minerals, because portion sizes are small.
- To prevent stomach upset, avoid eating foods with stringy textures, foods that are tough or are extremely fibrous. Other things to avoid are sodas, popcorn, nuts and seeds.
