How to Set Classroom Goals
- 1). Tell the students about one or two goals you accomplished in the last year. Add a goal that a friend or family member accomplished if you wish.
- 2). Ask the students what they accomplished in the last year. Write down a few examples on the board.
- 3). Talk about some things you would like to accomplish this year. Tie it into your accomplishments from last year if you can. For example, if last year, you learned to play an instrument, perhaps this year you might want to get good enough to play shows. Make your goals as specific as possible.
- 4). Ask the students for some goals they wish to accomplish this year. Start with personal goals, then ask for school goals. Ask them what they would like to learn about, what sort of grades they would like to get, how they would like the school year to go, and other school related topics.
- 5). Make a list of class goals. Include things like respecting each other, turning in work on time and other classroom behavior goals. Also, include specific things the students would like to learn about.
- 6). Meet privately with each student for a few minutes. Talk to him about what his favorite and least favorite subjects are, and his other strengths and weaknesses. Set personal goals with him. Emphasize academic goals, but also including other goals if he wishes to include them. Academic goals include things like learning to sit still, improving spelling skills or avoiding conflicts with other students. Other goals include practicing basketball three times a week or taking ballet lessons.
