Seems like there's a new social media network launched every month. If we had 100 hours in a day, we might be able to use a small fraction of all the social media tools available. Unfortunately, there isn't, and so you have to pick and choose which one works best for you.

If you're on the fence, you might want to consider Google+ as your social media weapon of choice. It may not be perfect, but if you care about website traffic, then take a look at the following information and decide for yourself.

Do you want your website to show up in the very first position when people go to Google and type in relevant keywords for your business? Of course you do. That may not happen overnight, but using it will give you an advantage.

Social signals are becoming a major part of Google's search engine ranking algorithm. And, since Plus is their baby, they are very determined to see it succeed on a massive scale. For them, it's more about controlling information so they can provide better search results and continue to make boatloads of money from advertising. For you, it's about using Google+ to get more traffic to your website.

Google+ is now experimenting with putting Google+ profiles in the search results. When you go to Google and type in certain names or brands, the very first result could be the relevant Google+ profile. Not in every case, but some cases. It's still in the testing stage.

If you have a Google+ profile for your business, you get instant top ranking and you can control what information you include on your Google+ profile so you can tailor the message and include links back to your primary website.

If you have a plus one button on your blog or website, and people plus one your content, Google uses that information as part of their ranking algorithm. The more people who like your content and click the plus one button, the more benefit you'll get in the SERPs (search engine results pages).

SInce it's also a social network, you can also share content on Plus. The more your content is shared, the more benefit you'll see. If you can get your content shared by the top thought leaders in your community, the more benefit you'll see in your rankings. These are social signals that Google can use to determine the best, most relevant content for specific keywords.

It's very possible that Google Places, which is the current local listing directory for Google, will eventually be merged into Plus. They provide the same information except Plus allows for more engagement, more control over the content and has a lot more features. There's no reason for Places to exist if they can merge the information into Plus.

In addition, Google just rolled out something called, "Search, Plus Your World." If you're logged into Google and you search for information, they can return personalized results customized based on your social network.

If people in your social network shared relevant content, they will show you the content and show you who shared it. If you shared relevant content, that information, along with your "endorsement" will show up in the search results.

So, not only is Google providing you with what they believe is the most relevant results for your query, but they're also showing you what people in your network have recommended. The bigger your network, the more visible your brand will be.

The bottom line is that Google+ is a great tool for promoting your business, not just from a social networking standpoint, but also from a search engine optimization standpoint.
